A connection that drops in motion stops the work

A vehicle is the moving edge of the network. Coverage changes block to block, every carrier has holes, and a phone hotspot or a tethered tablet was never built to ride a full shift of vibration, heat, and handoffs from one tower to the next. When the link drops, the work drops with it.

What that costs depends on the vehicle. For a patrol officer it is a plate that will not run, a report that will not file, and video that will not move. For a fleet it is a driver cut off from dispatch and electronic logging mid-route. For a transit bus it is passenger Wi-Fi, fare, and tracking systems offline. For a field crew it is data that never reaches back. The dead spot nobody planned for is the one that costs the shift.

A rugged in-vehicle router fixes it, but the router alone is not the answer. It needs the right antennas on the roof, more than one path back to the network, power that survives the vehicle, and someone to keep it online. That is the part Sector builds.

HOW WE APPROACH THIS

Start with the route and the coverage

Before any hardware, we map where the vehicle goes and where the network fails it: the carriers that cover the territory, the dead spots, the tunnels and yards, and what has to stay online. The route picks the build, not the other way around.

Size the router, radios, and antennas to match

From there we spec the gateway, the cellular bands and the number of radios, the SIMs and carriers, and the roof antennas for the coverage and the device load. Enough capacity for the job and no more, because an over-built system wastes budget and an under-built one drops the link.

Engineer the always-on path

A single carrier is a single point of failure. We design the failover so the link survives a dead carrier or a dead zone, with multiple SIMs and carriers, satellite where the route needs it, and clean isolated power so the system rides the full shift.

Install it and keep it online

Sector mounts, powers, and commissions each vehicle, then provisions and monitors the fleet remotely. We handle the carriers, the SIMs, and the support, so a router in a moving vehicle does not turn into a truck roll every time it hiccups.

The router that holds the link in motion

The gateway is the heart of the build. It runs 4G LTE and 5G, in single or dual cellular radios, with dual-SIM carrier flexibility across the major networks and FirstNet-ready options for public safety. Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 turn the vehicle into its own network, a vehicle area network that keeps a laptop, a tablet, a DVR, and a hundred or more client devices online at once. GNSS with dead reckoning holds location through tunnels and urban canyons. It is built for the vehicle, with a rugged die-cast housing, a wide temperature range, and ignition-aware power, and it is managed from the cloud so the whole fleet is configured and watched without anyone touching the box.

ON THE ROOF

Antennas do half the work

A radio is only as good as the antenna feeding it. Roof-mount multi-port antennas combine cellular MIMO, Wi-Fi, and GPS in one low-profile dome, placed and cabled for clean signal and a factory finish. The antenna plan is engineered for the whole vehicle, so cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and anything else on the roof work together instead of interfering with each other. It is the least glamorous part of the system and one of the most common reasons a connection underperforms.

More than one way back to the network

One carrier is one point of failure. Sector designs the link to stay up when a carrier drops or the vehicle rolls into a dead zone, with multiple SIMs and carriers, automatic failover that switches paths without dropping the session, and bandwidth bonding where the job needs more throughput. Where the route runs past the edge of cellular, satellite failover keeps a thin always-on link alive. This is the always-on-in-motion part of the build, and it is the reason a real router beats a hotspot.

AT THE RURAL EDGE

Coverage where the signal is thin

In weak-signal territory a vehicle cellular booster amplifies what coverage there is, so the router has a usable signal to work with on back roads, in canyons, and at the rural edge of a county. This is coverage that moves with the vehicle, sized to the routes the fleet actually runs. Fixed buildings that block signal are a separate job. Sector keeps in-vehicle and in-building coverage distinct by design.

Powered, mounted, and part of the build

The router rides where the vehicle is hardest on electronics, so Sector isolates and conditions the power, adds safe power-down so it does not drain the battery, and mounts the gateway and antennas to survive vibration and weather. The router is the connectivity layer beneath the rugged laptops and tablets it serves, specced together with the device build rather than bolted on afterward. For events, incidents, and temporary sites, the same connectivity comes as a quick-deploy, battery-powered kit.
